Faculty Mentor: Ian B.K. Martin, M.D.
Director: International Emergency Medicine
I. Goals:
- To become a member of the international emergency medicine interest group of the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA)
- To attend at least one Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), American College of Emergency Medicine (ACEP), or EMRA international emergency medicine-related national meeting
- To plan the logistics of and participate in at least one international relief trip
- To develop and lead at least two didactic sessions related to a topic in international emergency medicine
- To design and conduct a research project related to a specific aspect of international emergency medicine
- To successfully apply to and enroll in an institutionally-accredited fellowship in international emergency medicine
II. Duration:
- 2.5 years
III. General Requirements:
PGY-1:
- Join EMRA's international emergency medicine interest group
- Work with faculty mentor to delineate a specific aspect of international emergency medicine (e.g., development of EMS systems, tropical medicine, etc.) for academic focus
PGY-2:
- Design, in conjunction with the faculty mentor, a manageable research project related to a specific aspect of international emergency medicine; this project may be conducted at Duke and/or at the international clinical site
- Assist in planning the logistics of an international relief trip
- Participate in an international relief trip
PGY-3:
- Attend an SAEM, ACEP, or EMRA international emergency medicine-related national meeting
- Develop and lead two didactic sessions related to a topic (e.g., the resident's research project) in international emergency medicine
- Apply for international emergency medicine fellowship
IV. Evaluation:
The faculty mentor will frequently provide verbal feedback to the participating resident. During the PGY-3 training year, the faculty mentor will provide a written summative evaluation to the participant. This summative evaluation will be incorporated into a letter of support for an application for fellowship training in international emergency medicine.

The requirements for this track are non-binding and may be tailored to the individual interests and needs of the interested resident(s).
