Simulation

Summary

Simulation is the future of medical education -- and the future is now. This track will prepare residents to be experts in the field of medical simulation.

Curriculum

Faculty Mentor : T. Plante MD, J. Broder MD

Goals:

•  To gain expertise in the area of resuscitation

•  Develop a perspective for the role and scope of simulation in education

•  Create and expand the curriculum here at Duke with aims to contribute to the broader medical simulation community

Methods;

•  Graduated sophistication

•  Didactic and practical materials

•  Evaluation with attendance, open book question lists, brief reports, observed simulation moderation and case development

Proposed Plan:

PGY-1:

•  Learn APLS, ATLS, ACLS guidelines

•  Brief report of comparison of different simulators

•  Must complete airway simulator training and be signed off

PGY-2:

•  Read articles regarding EGDT, lytics for MI/PE/CVA, ED thoracotomy, airway management, MGH simulation curriculum

•  Complete question sets regarding these articles (5-10 questions open book)

•  X hours spent in SEAL lab gaining expertise at running the Simulator

•  Complete pacer, vascular access simulator training modules and be signed off

PGY-3:

•  Must plan and moderate 6 simulation cases (with assistance from myself and/or Josh)

•  Complete and submit simulation case to SAEM database
