Curriculum
Mentor: David Berkoff MD
Objectives:
To introduce the resident to the subspecialty of sports medicine and develop a area of expertise within the specialty
To provide exposure to at least 4 other areas relevant to this track:
i. Extremity specific evaluations and injuries
ii. Rehabilitation
iii. Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
iv. Sideline and Event Coverage
v. Sports Medicine and performance related research.
Duration: 2.5 years
General Requirements:
PGY1:
Become proficient in basic musculoskeletal exams of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle and back
Assist in pre-participation physicals for high school and or Duke student athletes
Attend at least 2 events providing sideline coverage for local sporting events
PGY2:
- Attend a minimum of 7 sports medicine clinics. 3 will be as part of the orthopedic rotation the others at other times where time permits
- Develop two core conference talks related to sports medicine
- Attend 5 or more sports medicine grand round conferences during the year
- Develop administrative project with mentor.
- Get involved in ongoing research project or write up case report/review as scholarly project.
- Attend at least 4 events providing sideline coverage for local sporting events
PGY3:
- Attend sports medicine clinic during elective time.
- Develop US skills related to the musculoskeletal exam.
- Attend at least 5 sports medicine grand round conferences.
- Give 4-5 resident lectures on topics related to sports medicine.
- Attend at least 6 events providing sideline coverage for local sporting events.
- Attend at least 4 training room clinics providing training room coverage for Duke Athletes.
- Strongly Encourage attendance at the AMSSM national conference in April of this year.
